There are many people trying to find a better way to study and understand the scriptures. There are many avenues that claim they will teach you how to study the Bible but when you investigate their claims you will find most of these sources provide little or no information on how to study the Bible.

You may be asking yourself, can I really study and understand the Bible? I think the Bible contains a simple test to answer that question. Read Matthew chapters 5 and 6. Now answer the following questions.

1. Did you understand the text?

2. Do you agree with the text?

3. Does this text describe the life you want to have and be able to lead?

If you can answer yes to any of the above questions concerning Matthew chapters 5 and 6 the following studies may be just what you have been searching for.

Learn to understand all parables by simple word studies.

1. Pray for guidance of the Holy Spirit

2. Identify keys words in the Bible verse.

3. Look up these key words in a Bible Concordance or computer Bible program. Other verses in the Bible will lead you to the spiritual meaning of the key words.

4. Substitute the spiritual meaning for the key words and paraphrase the text using the spiritual words.

Example Number 1:

KJV Proverbs 25:4. Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.

The very first step is to look at the physical aspects of the text. It helps to actually rewrite the text and write your understanding of the text.

Take away the dross (impurities) from the silver and it will become a container for the refiner.

A refiner is someone which refines silver by removing impurities. The refiner melts down the silver, bringing it to a certain temperature at which time the impurities, called dross, separate from the silver, floating to the top. The refiner can now remove the impurities. When the silver is pure it can be used to make something such as a container which is useful and valuable.

The next step is to identify the key words you feel may have a spiritual meaning. In Proverbs 25:4 we have four key words to investigate. They are dross, silver, vessel and finer. Now look up text containing these key words.

DROSS

KJV Proverbs 26:23. Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

KJV Psalms 119:119. Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.

The Bible shows us the wicked of the earth are like dross. Dross represents wickedness or wicked people. Notice how key words are defined within the Bible. Often times the definition of key words will be given much like we would explain a definition, by using phrases such as, “are like” or, “of the”. We would use the same terms to form a description, such as, “dolphins are like a fish” or dolphins are of the mammal family.”

SILVER

KJV Proverbs 16:16. How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

KJV Psalms 12:6. The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

KJV Psalms 119:72. The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

The above texts tell us understanding is more valuable than silver. We need to look further to know what it is we are supposed to understand. The Psalms tells us the law of God and the words of God are spiritually represented by silver.

Here are other terms God uses indicating definitions of keywords, by using comparative context. Here terms such as, “understanding rather to be chosen than silver“, “words: as silver” and “law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.” law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver. Conjunctions such as, “than” or “as” indicate a comparison between words or phrases. Another commonly used conjunction is the word, “like.” We use these words in everyday language to create comparisons. “The juice tasted like freshly squeezed grapes.” This example gives a definition to the juice, we now know what the juice was made from. In the same manner God uses conjunctions to give His key words spiritual meaning.

VESSEL

KJV Psalms 2:9. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

KJV Psalms 31:12. I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

When we look at texts containing the word vessel we see the Bible compares people to a vessel. A vessel is used to represent a person.

FINER

KJV Malachi 3:2-3

2. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: 3. And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.

A finer or refiner is used to represent God.

Now that we have identified the key words and found text to explain what each word represents we can create a chart.

DROSS = a wickedness, a wicked person

SILVER = the word or law of God

VESSEL = a person

FINER = God

We can then look at the original text and see how the spiritual words help explain the hidden meaning.

KJV Proverbs 25:4. Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.

We can paraphrase the text using the spiritual meanings for the key words we looked up in the Bible.

Take away the dross (wickedness or wicked people) from the silver (law and word of God), and there shall come forth a vessel (person) for the refiner (God).

Take away the wickedness (put there by other people) from the law and the word of God and there shall come forth a person fit for God.

We can now look and compare the physical aspects of original text with the spiritual aspects of the paraphrase that we made using the spiritual words found in the Bible. Silver is purified by taking out the impurities called dross. When the silver has been purified and prepared by the refiner, the one working with it can now use the silver to make a useful object, in this case we see that a vessel or type of container is being made.

Using the spiritual words substituted for the physical objects in the text we have found the words and or the law of God has been mixed with impurities. But you may be asking, “how can the word of God contain any impurities?” The pure word of God does not contain any impurities. But when the word of God is changed by man or is mixed with man’s words, ideas or concepts it becomes polluted. Whenever we paraphrase Biblical text we need to prove the paraphrase using nothing but the Bible. To prove this paraphrase we need to see if the Bible contains texts supporting the idea there may have been changes to the word or law of God.

KJV Daniel 7:25. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

The book of Daniel gives us a story of a beast power that will, “speak great words against the most High and think to change times and laws”. This is evidence certain powers will attempt to change the laws of God.

Every year the United States spends millions of dollars in court costs arguing phrases and even individual words written in the Constitution. At times these people are arguing a point in an attempt to persuade others that the writers of the Constitution meant to say one thing or another in a particular manner which would give greater weight to the beliefs of the individual or group. Most often these points involve something that may result in a great benefit for a particular group. The reason these points need to be considered with great care is, the benefit for one group usually results in a sacrifice on the part of others.

Given the chance many people would be very eager to alter the laws and words of God in an attempt to strengthen their beliefs an a particular point. This is happening and has been happening since the early days of the church. If you have access to a number of Bibles look up Exodus 20 and see how many translations agree. Some churches have created major modifications to the ten commandments in an attempt to change God’s laws to suit their beliefs.

“For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts. Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord: Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law. The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us? The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God. The wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.” Malachi 2:7-8, Isaiah 30:1, Isaiah 30:9-12, Zephaniah 3:4, Psalms 12:3-4, Psalms 53:1-4, Daniel 12:10

“He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. They refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. They made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:” John 8:47, Zechariah 7:11-12, Amos 8:11

It is not difficult to find evidence in both the Old and New Testaments verifying the fact people refused to follow the word of the Lord. Who is responsible for all of this?

KJV Isaiah 14:13. For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Satan introduced the first deception by changing a few words of God in the garden of Eden. Satan will twist words, question others, and add words of his own, all the time polluting the word of God in an attempt to mislead people.

KJV 2 Timothy 2:15. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Now that we have learned the meaning to four spiritual words we can check other Bible text to see if these interpretations remain true.

Example Number 2:

KJV Isaiah 1: 22. Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:

To rewrite Isaiah 1:22 we may say, “Your silver has become impure (dross), your wine is mixed with water.

In this case pure silver has either become mixed with impurities, something has been added or the silver has been changed. The wine has clearly been watered down. Water has been added to the wine. But for what reason?

Since we have already studied the words silver and dross we can use our findings to paraphrase the first half of Isaiah 1:22.

Your (man’s use of) silver (Gods words and law) has become dross (wicked), your wine is mixed with water.

We can test our paraphrase by studying the second part of Isaiah 1:22 to see if it will agree with the interpretation of the first part. To begin we need to find the spiritual meaning for the words wine and water.

WINE

KJV Proverbs 4:17. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

KJV Proverbs 20:1. Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

KJV Proverbs 23:30. They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. 31. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. 32. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

KJV Isaiah 5:22. Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: 23. Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

Solomon tells us that wine is a spiritual word for violence and is equivalent to mocking. It is also poisonous. Isaiah tells us that wine is used by the wicked to justify their actions. What does it mean to justify the wicked? Does it mean that people are getting drunk from the wine and using it as an excuse for them to carry out violent acts?

We have to remember we are looking for a spiritual meaning to the word wine that will agree with the first part of Isaiah 1:22, dealing with God’s law and or words.

KJV Isaiah 51:21. Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:

Isaiah 51 tells us these people are, “drunken, but not with wine“. We can see from this verse wine is indeed a spiritual representation of something other than the liquid we are familiar with. To answer the question we need to look at the word water to see if it will help us understand the verse.

WATER

KJV Isaiah 17:12. Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!

KJV Isaiah 57:20. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.

Isaiah shows water can be used to represent people. Most of us are familiar with Revelation 17:15 “And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” It is not difficult to grasp the concept that water represents people. We should also note, Isaiah indicates that the wicked, “waters cast up mire and dirt.” This should remind us of the silver mixed with dross. As we look further into the Bible we gain a better understanding of the spiritual concepts of water.

KJV Proverbs 18:4. The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

KJV Proverbs 20:5. Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

In the book of Solomon we are given a spiritual concept reflecting quite the opposite of what we have seen in Isaiah. Solomon seems to be telling us water can represent positive aspects of men while Isaiah deals with negative or wicked aspects.

KJV Isaiah 44:3. For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

KJV Mark 1:8. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

KJV Acts 10:47. Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

These three texts give us a spiritual link between water and the Holy Spirit.

KJV Revelation 7:17. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

KJV John 4:10. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

KJV John 7:37. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) 40. Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.

Here are three additional texts establishing a link between water, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. After we have investigated the word water using only the Bible and found two meanings do we simply accept this fact, or we do look deeper into the Bible to see if the Bible will justify a dual meaning to the spiritual word water.

KJV James 3:10. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

James makes it clear there are two distinct opposite types of water, “sweet water and bitter”. Each of these have their own source just as we have seen in the text we have studied. The physical water described in the Bible has two different sources. One for sweet water, the other for bitter water. Spiritual water also has two sources, one from the Holy Spirit, the other from men.

KJV Isaiah 1:22. Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:

After we have investigated the key words in our text we can now compile a chart.

SILVER = the word or law of God

DROSS = wickedness, a wicked person

WINE = violence, mocking, the actions of the wicked

WATER = troubled or rushing water = wicked people

Water is also used to represent the Holy Spirit.

Now that we have collected all of the key words and their meanings we can now paraphrase the text.

Your (man’s use of) silver (law or word of God) has become dross (wicked), your wine (actions of the wicked) is mixed with water (wicked people or the Holy Spirit).

Since we have a dual meaning for the word water we can write two paraphrases.

Man’s use of the word of God has become polluted by the wicked, the actions of the wicked are mixed with wicked people.

This paraphrase may sound correct but the second part, “the actions of the wicked are mixed with wicked people” appears redundant.

Man’s use of the word of God has become polluted by the wicked, the actions of the wicked are mixed with the Holy Spirit.

This paraphrase of wine and water fully agrees with the first part of the text silver and dross. When we look up the spiritual meaning for the key words of this text we find the word of God and the true meaning of the Holy Spirit are being changed, altered or polluted by wicked men. When silver contains dross it has something added to make it impure. When wine is mixed with water it also has something added that makes it appear less harmful. The wicked attempt to justify the things they do by sprinkling in a bit of the Holy Spirit. We can see they are trying to falsely justify what they are doing. Remember Isaiah 5 tells us wine will be used to, “justify the wicked, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him”. We now understand Isaiah is telling us the wicked will use their own ideas to change the word of God and take away the righteousness of men.

We once again look at the physical traits of the text and compare them with what we have found using the spiritual definitions. Physical silver is made impure by adding dross. Spiritual silver, the word of God, is made impure by adding spiritual dross or adding man’s words to the word of God.

Physical wine may appear less threatening when mixed with water just as spiritual wine or the works of the wicked attempt to appear less harmful when mixed with the Holy Spirit.

We are familiar with little sayings called a maxim or adage, that may be commonly known in some regions of the country and never used in other regions.

A couple found a home for sale priced $100,000 below market value. This house was priced in the lower $200,000 range. They had to make a decision to sell their existing home which they had purchased three years ago when the market exhibited it’s highest prices. Since that time they had invested $10,000 in remodeling the home. After looking at the marketing figures for their neighborhood, they determined they would be lucky to sell the house for the original purchase price in the $160,000 range. They viewed this transaction as if they would be loosing the $10,000 they invested in remodeling. They were so caught up in the idea they wanted to make a profit on the existing home, they completely missed the fact the new home was potentially worth $100,000 more than the list price. After spending a few days grieving over the idea of selling their existing home for less than what they had invested, another couple made the decision for them and purchased the $200,000 home. In this case you could say that this couple was not the brightest penny in the roll.

This is an example of an adage or a short proverb making perfect sense to some people but could leave others confused. What does it mean when we say, “not the brightest penny in the roll?” It means they do not make the wisest decisions. We can reveal this adage by later explaining, a wise person is like a bright penny. Once you understand a bright penny is used to symbolize a wise person, you would know a person who was not the brightest penny may not be a wise person.

This is an example of what God has done while inspiring the Bible. God has used a series of short sayings to protect His word. Therefore, speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law. Matthew 13:13, Deuteronomy 29:29

Using this method God has placed hundreds or possibly thousands of links in His word that make a connection between everyday physical words and their spiritual meanings. The Bible is the only book in the world written in this method. It is a sophisticated method of writing God has put together in sixty six books over a span of thousands of years. By using this method of writing God has ensured His word against change. The method of understanding has been hidden from those that would change the Bible if they could.

“Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp. Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:” Isaiah 28:9-10, Psalms 19:7-8, Psalms 49:3-4, Psalms 37:31, Amos 3:7, Habakkuk 2:2, Isaiah 30: 8

God does not want you to remain a baby being fed with only milk. A baby depends on someone else for every little thing. This is exactly what happens when you rely upon others to do your studying for you. God wants you to stand on your own, to know how to prepare your own meals. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” KJV Rev 3:20-21

God wants you to know how to study on your own. Take hold of the promise, God will make “wise the simple”. As we have seen, studying the Bible involves looking up key words and comparing them with Biblical text. Study line upon line and the Holy Spirit will reveal His secret to you. Once you learn a few words you can put them to a test using other text that will introduce new words. This is precept upon precept, the way the Bible was meant to be studied. Write it upon a table so you will understand, “that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:”

Bones a Simple Study

Matthew 23:25-35 NKJV 25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 26 “Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 “Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 “and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’ 31 “Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 “Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt. 33 “Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? 34 “Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 “that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

The first step in analyzing any text is to look at the physical attributes that can be easily understand.  Jesus  is talking to a group of scribes and Pharisees.  These people were the religious leaders of Israel.  They were also the people that plotted to put Jesus to death.  “Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.  From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.” KJV Matthew 12:14, Matthew 16:21

There is no need to analyze what frame of mind Jesus was in when He spoke these words.  We need to concentrate on the words that Jesus spoke.  Jesus tells these people that they are blind.  We can assume that Jesus is speaking about their spiritual state.  They are told to first clean the inside of the cup and dish and the outside will also become clean.  Jesus is referring to the inside of a person, the heart.  Jesus then begins to compare them to tombs that are painted white on the outside to make them more appealing.  This could be a reference to the Pharisees style of dress;  “they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,”  Matthew 23:5   Jesus continues to tell them on the inside they are full of dead men’s bones.  This phrase is true in every physical sense.  You usually find bones inside of tombs.  But what is Jesus attempting to portray spiritually?  Was there a message for the Pharisees to see?

Jesus gives us a clue in verse 28.  Could these dead man’s bones represent hypocrisy and uncleanliness?

These Pharisees have built elaborate monuments in honor of the prophets.  They claim that if they were alive in the days of the prophets they would have had the scriptural knowledge to recognize and follow them.  They pride themselves on the fact they would not have made the same mistakes others did.  The scribes had copied the scriptures letter by letter and know it well.  But before them stands the Son of God and before Him they reveal their understanding of the scriptures.

There are a number of spiritual words to choose from in this text.  To keep this study short and to the point we will consider only one spiritual word, “bones”.  This will aid in illustrating the point that when we take the time to examine only one word in the Bible it can open up new avenues of understanding.  The Pharisees were experts in the law.  If Jesus was attempting to reach these people it would have been the most practical place to lead them and the most obvious place for us to look.

KJV Numbers 19:16  And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. 17.  And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel: 18.  And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave: 19.  And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even. 20.  But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the Lord: the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean. 21.  And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even. 22.  And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.

The book of Numbers tells us exactly what is to be done when anyone touches a dead body or a bone.  That person in unclean and needs to be cleansed.  Jesus was not telling this to the scribes and Pharisees because He was upset by them.  Jesus was telling them this because He wanted to reach them.  Jesus wanted to draw their minds to scripture they should have been familiar with.  This scripture when combined with the leading of the Holy Spirit would have lead their minds to the spiritual meaning of some of the other words used in Numbers 19.  Two thousand years later when we hear the word hyssop we are all reminded of the Passover.  The third day should have been a clue pointing to Jesus and His resurrection.  We are shown in the book of Acts that this passage must have made an impression on some of the priests.   “And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.”  KJV Acts 6:7

Another text that they may have been lead to is found in the book of Psalms.

KJV Psalms 51: 6.  Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7.  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8.  Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9.  Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10.  Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11.  Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12.  Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13.  Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

Some of the priest didn’t take the time to study the scriptures.  They relied upon their own memory for judgment.  In doing so they completely missed the point Jesus was trying to make and as a result crucified Him.

KJV Psalms 58: 3.  The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. 4.  Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear; 5.  Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

KJV Numbers 35: 33.  So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

KJV Lamentations 4:12  The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem. 13.  For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her, 14.  They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments.

KJV Revelation 18:23  And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. 24.  And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Jesus was trying to reach these people.  They should have known the scriptures.  Did they bother looking?  If they did the key words here would have confirmed that Jesus was the Son of God.  Some of the priest didn’t take the time to study the scriptures.  They relied upon their own memory for judgment.  In doing so they completely missed the point Jesus was trying to make and as a result crucified Him.

What was the result of the priests that did look at the scriptures?
KJV Acts 6:7
7.  And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

One of the great lessons we need to learn from this study is the fact that there were people standing right in front of Jesus that could not see He was the Son of God.  People did not recognize Jesus for one reason. Because they did not study the scriptures.  “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”  KJV John 5:39

“Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed”.  KJV John 20:29  We see Jesus through the scriptures.  We reveal a path to Jesus through our actions.  Others can see the way to Jesus through us but they do not gather a full impression of Jesus through us.  That can never happen.  If we know that this is true, why is it I see so many people satisfied with their knowledge of Jesus through the words of a pastor or other teacher?  No one on this earth can ever portray one tiny little fraction of Gods glory.  A true teacher will teach others how to study, how to see God for themselves.  A true teacher will never take the credit of saving a soul.  A true teacher will be interested in what each and every person sees within the scriptures.  The Spirit has the power to reveal God’s light to the spiritually lame, the spiritually blind, the deaf.  We are only vessels by which this message is carried.

Study of Babylon the Physical and Spiritual

The mystery of the Babylon in Revelation has confounded people for years. There are many speculations about what Babylon actually represents. People have spent hours, days and years gathering information in an attempt to answer this question. Historians have assembled arguments supporting parallels between the statements found in the text of Revelation and events in history. We need not question history, more than enough evidence lies within scripture itself to explain exactly what Babylon represents. The Bible alone can explain what Babylon represents.

KJV Revelation 14:8-9
8. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

The first step in studying any text within the Bible is to explain the physical aspects. In Rev 14 we see that Babylon is fallen. Which means that the city is defeated. The question is, who has defeated Babylon? We also see that Babylon, referred to as a woman (she) made nations drink of the wine of her fornication. To understand this text we need to find out what the wine represents, and what her fornication represents.

When examining text we need to understand both the physical and the spiritual context of the verse. We have already explained the physical aspects and the questions concerning them. We now need to look into the spiritual context. How do we determine what phrases of the text are spiritual? The easiest and most reliable method of determining the spiritual context of a verse is to determine it’s physical traits. If the circumstances of the statement defy the laws of nature in any form, the statement must be spiritual.

Revelation 14:8 tells us that Babylon is fallen. When did Babylon fall? “In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.” KJV Daniel 5:30-31 The kingdom of Babylon was defeated by Darius in about 539 BC. “Because of the wrath of the Lord it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and Satyrs shall dance there.” KJV Jeremiah 50:13 Isaiah 13:20,21 The Bible tells us that Babylon will never again be inhabited. It will remain desolate. We know this is still true today. Babylon was never to be rebuilt. So why does the book of Revelation, written more than 500 years after the fall of Babylon tell us that Babylon is fallen? There can be only two reasons. The first is John is referring to the fall of Babylon that occurred more than 500 years before his writing. Or the only other explanation is that this text is referring to a spiritual Babylon.

If this text is referring to a spiritual Babylon we must find the meaning of the text, “not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” KJV 1 Corinthians 2:13

The first place to look for a spiritual interpretation of a spiritual phrase is the book that it is found it. Often times spiritual symbols are explained else where in the same book of the Bible.

“And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.” KJV Revelation 16:19, Revelation 17:5, Revelation 18:2, Revelation 18:10, Revelation 18:21

Examining other text from Revelation we can clearly see that Babylon is a spiritual symbol. It represents the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. The spiritual meaning of Babylon is further explained as being a living place for devils, foul spirits, unclean and hateful birds. A bird will generally represent a man. Notice that Revelation 18:2 states that Babylon is fallen and is become the habitation of devils. A careless reading would lead one to believe that Babylon has fallen because it was the home of devils. The Bible states that Babylon has fallen and at that the time of the fall has become the hold of devils. It is like saying, “that used to be a really nice church until those fanatics showed up and started changing things.” We would consider that the fall of a church. The church will still physically stand and exist but has experienced a spiritual fall.

Babylon has a deep spiritual meaning. The deeper the meaning the harder we need to look. We have examined other verses in the book of Revelation that contain the word Babylon and do not have a full understanding of the word. We need to look at the text surrounding the verses containing Babylon to see if they contain further details.

KJV Revelation 17:4-8
4. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5. And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. 7. And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Here we see that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. Since the woman is also a spiritual representation of Babylon we see that this symbolizes a power or church that will persecute the saints. Martyrs are people that give up their lives for a belief. These martyrs die because of their belief in Jesus. Babylon is a spiritual representation of a power that wars against Jesus and God. This woman is seen riding on a beast that comes out of a bottomless pit and goes into perdition. There is only one power that comes for a pit and goes into perdition.

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” KJV 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Who is this son or perdition that will be revealed? We are given another clue to follow. The son of perdition will exalt himself above God. Is there such a person on earth that would do such a thing?

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. KJV Isaiah 14:12-15, Revelation 20:1-3, Revelation 20:10

It is clear to see that the beast this woman is shown riding on represents the power of Satan. The beast is not bridled so the woman does not have control of the beast. Rather the woman, Babylon is held up by the beast.

The book of Daniel has additional details describing the power that exalts himself.

KJV Daniel 11:36-39
36. And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. 37. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. 38. But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. 39. Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

Here is a wealth of important details we need to consider. This power will not regard the God of his fathers. Since verse 36 speaks of the God of gods this must be the one and only true living God. This could indicate that this religion will be born from a religion that does worship the true and living God. There could only be two religions that could give birth to such a power. This power must spring up from either the Hebrew or Christian religions. This religion will not have a desire towards women. This may mean that they will consider women to be second class citizens. At the very least this religion will not allow women to achieve offices or status as high as men are allowed to occupy.

Because the force behind this religion will magnify himself above all gods this must be a religion that stems it’s belief in other gods. The true Christian religion does not recognize other gods. “And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: KJV Deuteronomy 28:64, Habakkuk 2:18-19, 2 Kings 19:18, Revelation 9:20
This religion will honor a god of force with gold and silver. Physically this would indicate the funding of a strong army. Spiritually this would indicate that this religion will enforce it’s own interpretation of the word of God with violence. Or it may indicate that this religion will introduce false idols of gold and silver that people will cling to in the last days.

KJV Revelation 18:1-3
1. And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. 2. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. 3. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies

Looking further into Revelation 18 we see that all nations have drunk of the wrath of her fornication. Revelation 17 has shown us that the woman was drunk on the blood of the saints and the martyrs of Jesus. This text shows us that all nations will be assisting the woman in the persecution of the saints. The definition of fornication is adultery and idolatry. The condition of adultery represents a person that is not loyal to God. “I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness; they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.” KJV Jeremiah 23:14 Idolatry need not be explained. This relationship established with this woman riding upon Satan shares her power with the merchants of the earth. These business people became rich through this relationship. Through Satan’s power people are made rich and people are given positions of power. Because Satan has placed people in control of the governments and vital businesses the fall of Babylon will have a serious effect on the economic climate of the earth.

Other books of the Bible may add important information, guiding us to a complete understanding of word Babylon.

KJV Genesis 11:7-9
7. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Babel was the first city built after the flood and was the original name of Babylon. Babel was the site of a tower the people decided to build. ‘And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” KJV Genesis 11:4 They were committing the same sin as Satan, attempting to set their throne above God and make themselves a name.

KJV 2 Kings 24:8-17
8. Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother’s name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. 9. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father had done. 10. At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. 11. And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants did besiege it. 12. And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers: and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign. 13. And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord, as the Lord had said. 14. And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths: none remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land. 15. And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the king’s mother, and the king’s wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land, those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. 16. And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all that were strong and apt for war, even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon. 17. And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father’s brother king in his stead, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Because there is so much information contained in this text we will first take a look at the physical aspects. Jehoiachin was the king of Judah. When looking at the spiritual aspects of a text we have to remember that there is a difference between Judah and Israel. Jehoiachin is from the line of king David and has quite a different spiritual role than the kings of Israel. In this case Jehoiachin was an evil king and did not follow in the ways of David. This is why Judah was handed over to Babylon. After Jerusalem was defeated by Babylon the treasures of the house of the Lord were carried away to Babylon. What was left of the army of Judah and the craftsmen were also carried away to Babylon. The Bible says they were carried away, “into captivity.” The kings mother and wives and his officers were also carried away. The king of Babylon appointed a new king in Judah. It is interesting to note that the only kings that were chosen by God to lead Judah were Saul, the first king of Judah and David who succeeded him. The rest of the kings of Judah were from the line of David as promised by God. Not one of them had the blessing of God that had been specifically mentioned with David and Saul.

If we look at the spiritual aspects of 2 Kings 24 we will see more identifying remarks that will help us understand the role the spiritual Babylon of Revelation will play in the last days.

Babylon was allowed to conquer Judah because of their sins. This was some time after the conquest of Israel, the ten northern tribes. This makes it clear that the spiritual Babylon of Revelation will have the ability to conquer people that have the appearance of following God but have allowed their sins to grow to a level beyond what God will allow. The Bible tells us that the physical Babylon carried away the treasures out of the house of the Lord. The spiritual Babylon will have images that will convince people this spiritual Babylon is worshipping the true God. But remember, the woman that represents the spiritual Babylon is sitting upon a beast that represents Satan. It is clear to see that many people will be deceived. Just as the physical Babylon carried away captive the mighty men, the craftsmen, the kings officers, mothers and wives the spiritual Babylon will carry away captive both men and women. The mighty men tell us that the spiritual Babylon will have military influence. The craftsmen indicate economic control. The officers represent control of the government. Spiritual Babylon will have complete control.

KJV 2 Kings 25:1-30
1. And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about. 2. And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. 3. And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land. 4. And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain. 5. And the army of the Chaldees pursued after the king, and overtook him in the plains of Jericho: and all his army were scattered from him. 6. So they took the king, and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment upon him. 7. And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon. 8. And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem: 9. And he burnt the house of the Lord, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man’s house burnt he with fire. 10. And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about. 11. Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon, with the remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carry away. 12. But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen. 13. And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the Lord, and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the Lord, did the Chaldees break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon. 14. And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away. 15. And the firepans, and the bowls, and such things as were of gold, in gold, and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away. 16. The two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made for the house of the Lord; the brass of all these vessels was without weight. 17. The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates upon the chapiter round about, all of brass: and like unto these had the second pillar with wreathen work. 18. And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door: 19. And out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the king’s presence, which were found in the city, and the principal scribe of the host, which mustered the people of the land, and threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the city: 20. And Nebuzaradan captain of the guard took these, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah: 21. And the king of Babylon smote them, and slew them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land. 22. And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, ruler. 23. And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 24. And Gedaliah sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.

Looking at the physical aspects of 2 Kings 25 we need to understand that historically this event follows the events in 2 Kings 24. There is a small number remaining in Judah that rebel against Babylon. Once again Babylon lays siege on Jerusalem. There is a great famine, there is no food in the city. The people have no physical food to eat. When Jerusalem is conquered for the second time the remaining items is the house of the Lord are carried away and it is burned. Many of the remaining people are carried away. The priests and scribes are killed.

This text tells us that there will be a second assault by spiritual Babylon which causes a great famine. “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.” Amos 8:11-12 Spiritual Babylon will hatch a plan that will deplete the world of the word of God. At this point it appears that the inferior substitute spiritual Babylon is creating is complete. When studying the temple and tabernacle one needs to know the back ground of the two. The tabernacle was built after a pattern God personally showed to Moses. “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.” KJV Exodus 25:8-9 Moses was shown the original sanctuary in Heaven and given the pattern by God. The Bible lists explicit instructions for the tabernacle. There are many differences compared to the temple built by Solomon. All of the instruments used in the tabernacle were made of gold, except for the alter that was covered in brass. The final articles carried away by Babylon were made of brass. Gold symbolizes the law and word of God. “Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.” KJV Psalms 119:127 Brass represents captivity. “And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon.” KJV 2 Kings 25:7 There is one very important item that Babylon will never be allowed to carry away, the ark containing the law of God and the mercy seat. The deception set up by the woman, Babylon and the beast will not contain the law of God or the mercy seat. The true temple of God contains the ark. “And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament:” KJV Revelation 11:19

Babylon kills the priests and scribes. This represents the persecution mentioned in Revelation. “And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.” KJV Revelation 13:7 Babylon will convince people that the only way to remain safe is to serve Babylon, the woman riding upon the beast.

And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. KJV Revelation 13:15-17

There is no doubt that the captivity in spiritual Babylon will be a spiritual captivity. If people are physically held captive they will have no need to buy or sell. They would be slaves. Strange as it may seem, there is one commandment that reminds us we were once slaves.

15. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day. Deuteronomy 5:15

Just as the Lord lead the Israelites out of Egypt into the promised land, God will lead His people out of the captivity of Babylon into the promised land.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:1-4

KJV 2 Chronicles 36:18-23
18. And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon. 19. And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. 20. And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: 21. To fulfil the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

2 Chronicles 36 confirms what we have found in 2 Kings 24 and 25.

KJV Isaiah 13:1-22
1. The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see. 2. Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles. 3. I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness. 4. The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the Lord of hosts mustereth the host of the battle. 5. They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the Lord, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land. 6. Howl ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 7. Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man’s heart shall melt: 8. And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames. 9. Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 11. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 12. I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. 13. Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the Lord of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. 14. And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land. 15. Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. 16. Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished. 17. Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. 18. Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children. 19. And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. 20. It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. 21. But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and Satyrs shall dance there. 22. And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

It is because of writing like this many so called theologians call Isaiah the rambling prophet. When people do not understand a section of the Bible it is not time to discount it based on the thoughts and understanding of a few, it is time to pray and study, to gain a clear understanding of the word. Isaiah 13 confirms a link between physical Babylon prophesied in the Old Testament and spiritual Babylon of Revelation that can be plainly seen. The same key words and events used on Isaiah 13 are used in Revelation.

KJV Revelation 6:12-17
12. And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13. And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16. And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17. For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

KJV Revelation 11:13
13. And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

KJV Revelation 16:18-19
18. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. 19. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

When spiritual Babylon will fall the wise and mighty men held captive by the deceptions will be so convinced by the forms of worship they follow that they will turn to their religious leaders and ask to be saved by them in the great day of the Lord.

“Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my rock; He only is my rock and my salvation.” Psalms 28:1, Psalms 62:2 “For their rock is not as our Rock.” Deuteronomy 32:31

Isaiah drifts between physical Babylon and spiritual Babylon because one will explain the other. The prophesies are blended together within the word of God for a reason. God used a physical tabernacle here on earth to point to the spiritual temple in Heaven. God used the services of the tabernacle to point to the life, death, resurrection and ministry of Christ in Heaven. God also is using the history of physical Babylon to lead us to an understanding of the spiritual Babylon of the last days.

KJV Jeremiah 27:20-22
20. Which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took not, when he carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah from Jerusalem to Babylon, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem; 21. Yea, thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the Lord, and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem; 22. They shall be carried to Babylon, and there shall they be until the day that I visit them, saith the Lord; then will I bring them up, and restore them to this place.

God promises that the vessels carried away to Babylon will be returned. The items were returned by a proclamation set forth by Cyrus king of Persia. “Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;” KJV Ezra 1:1-2, 7

Just as the physical temple was rebuilt and the items returned to Jerusalem the spiritual will be returned. What does this mean?

“After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.” KJV Acts 15:16, Job 22:22-23, Psalms 138:2, Psalms 5:7

This does not mean that the physical temple will be rebuilt as some believe. Just as Babylon will never be rebuilt, because the book of Revelation deals strictly with a spiritual Babylon it is clear to see that the temple will also be spiritual. Babylon represents a form of false worship. The temple represents a true form of worship as the text indicates.

KJV Jeremiah 29:10-15
10. For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. 11. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 14. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive. 15. Because ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

Jeremiah further emphases this point. When you shall call upon God and pray unto Him and search with all of your heart, God will release you from this spiritual captivity. What does it mean to search with all of your heart? It means to study the word of God. To search His scriptures. To be lead by the Spirit into all truth. Worship is not building stone temples that only display the workmanship of men. True worship comes from the heart.

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” KJV John 4:23-24, Psalms 25:4-5, John 14:16-19, John 15:26, John 16:13-14

Babylon does not contain or teach truth. Babylon does not have the Spirit of God. Babylon does not have Christ, His Comforter or the power they embody.

KJV Jeremiah 50:34-41
34. Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. 35. A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the Lord, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. 36. A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed. 37. A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed. 38. A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols. 39. Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. 40. As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. 41. Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.

This prophesy focuses on the fall of physical Babylon but also reveals some interesting traits evident on both physical and spiritual Babylon. They will both be liars. Their treasure will come to nothing. A drought will dry up the physical water and spiritual water. They will worship idols. God has over thrown physical Babylon and will over throw spiritual Babylon.

KJV Jeremiah 51:6-9
6. Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. 7. Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. 8. Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed. 9. We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

KJV Revelation 18:2-5
2. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. 3. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. 4. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. 5. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

Jeremiah and Revelation are a reflection of one another. Comparing these text no one can deny the connection between the two. Jeremiah’s is prophesy is in regards to physical Babylon. There is no doubt Revelation is speaking about spiritual Babylon. A close study of the Bible will confirm a relationship between the two. There should be no doubt the physical aspects of the past Babylon will show us the spiritual aspects of the Babylon to come after the days of John the revelator.

KJV Jeremiah 52:9-16
9. Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath; where he gave judgment upon him. 10. And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes: he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah. 11. Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death. 12. Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, which served the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem, 13. And burned the house of the Lord, and the king’s house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the houses of the great men, burned he with fire: 14. And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about. 15. Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people, and the residue of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude. 16. But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vinedressers and for husbandmen.

Whenever we see an acted parable repeated in the Bible three times of more it is a signal to pay attention. It is like a road sign that tells us, “this is the highway to truth.” It will lead to a message God wants us to understand. God does not waste His words. These prophesies were repeated time and time again, spoken to the people of Israel and Judah as a warning. These words were preserved throughout generations not as a history lesson but a warning for the future.

Zedekiah had his eyes put out to represent the spiritual blindness that will be experienced by those held in captivity by Babylon.

“And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord? And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:” KJV Exodus 4:11, Deuteronomy 28:29, Matthew 15:14, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, Ephesians 4:18

“And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.” KJV John 9:39, 2 Corinthians 3:14

“And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Cursed be he that maketh the blind to wander out of the way. And all the people shall say, Amen.” KJV Luke 4:17-19, Isaiah 35:5, Deuteronomy 27:18

William Miller Explains Bible Study

In order that the reader may have an understanding of my manner of studying the Prophecies, by which I have come to the following result, I have thought proper to give some of the rules of interpretation which I have adopted to understand prophecy.

Prophetical scripture is very much of it communicated to us by figures and highly and richly adorned metaphors; by which I mean that figures such as beasts, birds, air or wind, water, fire, candlesticks, lamps, mountains, islands, &c., are used to represent things prophesied of–such as kingdoms, warriors, principles, people, judgments, churches, word of God, large and smaller governments. It is metaphorical also, showing some peculiar quality of the thing prophesied of, by the most prominent feature or quality of the figure used, as beasts–if a lion, power and rule; if a leopard, celerity; if a bear, voracious; an ox, submissive; a man, proud and independent. Fire denotes justice and judgment in its figure; in the metaphor, denotes the purifying or consuming up the dross or wickedness; as fire has a cleansing quality, so will the justice or judgments of God. “For when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.” Therefore almost all the figures used in prophecy have their literal and metaphorical meaning; as beasts denote, literally, a kingdom, so metaphorically good or bad, as the case may be, to be understood by the subject in connection.

To understand the literal meaning of figures used in prophecy, I have pursued the following method:–I find the word “beast” used in a figurative sense; I take my concordance, trace the word, and in Daniel vii. 17, it is explained to mean “kings or kingdoms.” Again, I come across the words “bird or fowl,” and in Isa. xlvi. 11, it is used meaning a conqueror or warrior,–Cyrus. Also, in Ezekiel xxxix. 4-9, denotes armies or conquerors. Again, the words “air or wind,” as used in Rev. ix. 2, and 16, 17, to understand which I turn to Eph. ii. 2, and 4-14, and there learn that it is used as a figure to denote the theories of worldly men or vain philosophy. Again, “water or rivers” are used as figures in Rev. xvii. 15, it is explained to mean “people or nations.” “Rivers” of course mean the nation or people living on the river mentioned, as in Rev., xvi. 12. “Fire” is often used in a figurative sense; explained in Num. xxi. 27-28, Deut. xxxii. 22, Psal. lxxviii. 21, Heb. xii. 29, to mean justice and judgment.

As prophecy is a language somewhat different from other parts of Scripture, owing to its having been revealed in vision, and that highly figurative, yet God in his wisdom has so interwoven the several prophecies, that the events foretold are not all told by one prophet, and although they lived and prophesied in different ages of the world, yet they tell us the same things; so you take away one, and a link will be wanting. There is a general connection through the whole; like a well-regulated community they all move in unison, speaking the same things, observing the same rules, so that a Bible reader may almost with propriety suppose, let him read in what prophecy he may, that he is reading the same prophet, the same author. This will appear evident to any one who will compare scripture with scripture. For example, see Dan. xii. 1, Matt. xxiv. 21. Isa. xlvii. 8. Zeph. ii. 15, Rev. xviii. 7. There never was a book written that has a better connection and harmony than the Bible, and yet it has the appearance of a great store-house full of all the precious commodities heart could desire, thrown in promiscuously; therefore, the biblical student must select and bring together every part of the subject he wishes to investigate, from every part of the Bible; then let every word have its own Scripture meaning, every sentence its proper bearing, and have no contradiction, and your theory will and must of necessity be correct. Truth is one undeviating path, that grows brighter and brighter the more it is trodden; it needs no plausible arguments nor pompous dress to make it more bright, for the more naked and simple the fact, the stronger the truth appears.

Let it be noticed that God has revealed to his prophets the same events in divers figures and at different times, as he has to Daniel in the second, seventh, and eighth chapters concerning the four kingdoms; or to Peter, (see Acts x. 16;) also Isaiah and John. Then, to get the whole truth, all those visions or prophecies must be concentrated and brought together, that have reference to the subject which we wish to investigate; and when combined, let every word and sentence have its proper bearing and force in the grand whole, and the theory or system, as I have before shown, must be correct. I have likewise noticed that in those events, visions, and prophecies which have had their fulfilment, every word and every particular has had an exact and literal accomplishment, and that no two events have ever happened, that I can learn, which will exactly apply or fulfil the same prophecy. Take, for instance, the prophecies concerning the birth, life, and crucifixion of our Savior, and in his history we find a literal fulfilment; yet in the birth, life, or death of any other individual it would be in vain to find a parallel. Again, take the prophecies which have been admitted, by Protestants at least, to apply to Cyrus, Alexander, Julius Cæsar, destruction of Jerusalem, and the church of Rome, and I have never been able to trace even a resemblance to the prophecies in question in any historical events except the true ones. If this is true, may we not suppose that the unfulfilled prophecies in their accomplishments will be equally as evident and literal?

There are two important points to which all prophecy seems to centre, like a cluster of grapes upon its stem–the first and second coming of Christ; the first coming to proclaim the gospel, set up his kingdom, suffer for sinners, and bring in an everlasting righteousness. His second coming, to which the ardent faith and pious hope of the tried and tempted child of God centres, is for complete redemption from sin, for the justification and glorification promised to all those who look for his appearing, the destruction of the wicked and mystical Babylon, the abomination of the whole earth.

His first coming was as a man, his human nature being only visible. He comes first, like the “first man of the earth, earthy;” his second coming is “the Lord from heaven.” His first coming was literally according to the prophecies. And so we may safely infer will be his second appearance, according to the Scriptures. At his advent, his forerunner was spoken of–”one crying in the wilderness;” the manner of his birth–”a child born of a virgin;” the place where–”Bethlehem of Judea;” the time of his death–”when seventy weeks should be fulfilled;” for what he should suffer–”to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.” The star that appeared, the stripes he received, the miracles he performed, the tauntings of his foes–all were literally fulfilled. Then, why not suppose that all the prophecies concerning his second coming will be as literally accomplished as the former! Can any man show a single reason why it will not? If this be true, we can obtain much light by reading the Scriptures. We are there informed of the manner of his second coming–”suddenly, in the clouds, in like manner as he ascended;” the majesty of his coming–”on a great white throne, with power and great glory, and all his saints with him;” the object of his coming–”as the Ancient of Days, to send his angels into the four winds of heaven gather his elect, raise the righteous dead, change the righteous living, chain Satan, destroy anti-Christ, the wicked, and all those who destroy the earth, judge, justify and glorify his people, cleanse his church, present her to his Father, live and reign with her on the new heavens and new earth,” the form of the old having passed away.

Spiritual Words from The Great Controversy by Ellen White

This is a brief summary of some of the spiritual words explained by Ellen White in the Great Controversy.  Contact me for a complete list.

The Saviour inquired of his disciples if they understood these things. They answered, “Yea, Lord. Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” In this parable, Jesus presented before his disciples the responsibility of those whose work it is to give to the world the light which they have received from him. The Old Testament was all the Scripture then in existence; but it was not written merely for the ancients; it was for all ages and for all people. Jesus would have the teachers of his doctrine diligently search the Old Testament for that light which establishes his identity as the Messiah foretold in prophecy, and reveals the nature of his mission to the world. The Old and the New Testament are inseparable, for both are the teachings of Christ. The doctrine of the Jews, who accept only the Old Testament, is not unto salvation, since they reject the Saviour whose life and ministry was a fulfillment of the law and the prophecies. And the doctrine of those who discard the Old Testament is not unto salvation, because it rejects that which is direct testimony of Christ. Skeptics begin with discounting upon the Old Testament, and it takes but another step to deny the validity of the New, and thus both are rejected.  {2SP 254.1}
The Jews have little influence over the Christian world in showing them the importance of the commandments, including the binding law of the Sabbath, because in bringing forth the old treasures of truth, they throw aside the new ones in the personal teachings of Jesus. On the other hand, the strongest reason why Christians fail to influence the Jews to accept the teachings of Christ as the language of divine wisdom, is because, in bringing forth the treasures of his word, they treat with contempt the riches of the Old Testament, which are the earlier teachings of the Son of God, through Moses. They reject the law proclaimed from Sinai, and the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, instituted in the garden of Eden. But the minister of the gospel, who follows the teachings of Christ, will gain a thorough knowledge of both the Old and the New Testament, that he may present them in their true light to the people an inseparable whole–the one depending upon and illuminating the other. Thus, as Jesus instructed his disciples, they will bring forth from their treasure “things new and old.”  {2SP 255.1}
In looking abroad over the various fields where he had labored, Jesus was filled with compassion for those scattered ones who had accepted him as their Saviour, and looked to him for the bread of life. They seemed to him like sheep to be left without a shepherd, when he should ascend to Heaven. Before his sufferings and death, it was necessary that he should commission his disciples to go forth as his representatives, that the believers might look to them as divinely appointed teachers, so that in the approaching time of darkness and discouragement they would not be left without counselors. Calling the twelve about him, he said to them; “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.” As yet the disciples had little experience in preaching the practical truths received from their Lord; but they had been his companions for several months, and he had occasionally sent them forth to labor by themselves for a short time, to prepare them for their future mission when he should no longer be with them. But he now separated them in pairs, and sent them away from him in different directions. He delegated to them the power of working miracles, but they were in no case to employ this power for their own exaltation or advantage. They were to be gone but a few days, and they were not sent among strangers on this first tour, but among their brethren who were to prepare their way that they might have access to the people, many of whom earnestly desired to know more of the doctrines of Christ.  {2SP 255.2}

Incense = Prayers
GC 19  There, for ages, holy prophets had uttered their messages of warning. There priests had waved their censers, and the cloud of incense, with the prayers of the worshipers, had ascended before God.

Ladder = Connection with Heaven
GC 19  There rested the base of that mystic ladder connecting earth with heaven (Genesis 28:12; John 1:51)–that ladder upon which angels of God descended and ascended, and which opened to the world the way into the holiest of all.

Gift = All of Heaven
GC 19  When remonstrance, entreaty, and rebuke had failed, He sent to them the best gift of heaven; nay, He poured out all heaven in that one Gift.  {GC 19.1}

Vine = Israel
GC 19  It was Christ that had brought Israel as a goodly vine out of Egypt. Psalm 80:8. His own hand had cast out the heathen before it.

Fruitful hill = Israel
GC 19, 20  It was Christ that had brought Israel as a goodly vine out of Egypt. Psalm 80:8. His own hand had cast out the heathen before it. He had planted it “in a very fruitful hill.”

Hedge = angels
GC 20  His guardian care had hedged it about. His servants had been sent to nurture it.

Vineyard = Christ’s care
GC 20  “What could have been done more to My vineyard,” He exclaims, “that I have not done in it?” Isaiah 5:1-4.
CG 20  He came in person to His vineyard, if haply it might be saved from destruction.

Dig = Christ’s effort
GC 20  He digged about His vine; He pruned and cherished it. He was unwearied in His efforts to save this vine of His own planting.

Prune = Christ’s effort
GC 20  He digged about His vine; He pruned and cherished it. He was unwearied in His efforts to save this vine of His own planting.

Bound = blind, lame, deaf, lepers, dead
GC 20   For three years the Lord of light and glory had gone in and out among His people. He “went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil,” binding up the brokenhearted, setting at liberty them that were bound, restoring sight to the blind, causing the lame to walk and the deaf to hear, cleansing the lepers, raising the dead, and preaching the gospel to the poor. Acts 10:38; Luke 4:18; Matthew 11:5.

Tide = love
GC 20  The waves of mercy, beaten back by those stubborn hearts, returned in a stronger tide of pitying, inexpressible love.

Jerusalem = chosen, treasure
GC 21  The loss of even one soul is a calamity infinitely outweighing the gains and treasures of a world; but as Christ looked upon Jerusalem, the doom of a whole city, a whole nation, was before Him–that city, that nation, which had once been the chosen of God, His peculiar treasure.
Jerusalem = last day world
GC 22  Christ saw in Jerusalem a symbol of the world hardened in unbelief and rebellion, and hastening on to meet the retributive judgments of God.

Foundation = law
GC 22  The great sin of the Jews was their rejection of Christ; the great sin of the Christian world would be their rejection of the law of God, the foundation of His government in heaven and earth.

Blind = pride, unbelief
GC 24  For centuries the Jews had vainly endeavored to show wherein the promise of God given by Haggai had been fulfilled; yet pride and unbelief blinded their minds to the true meaning of the prophet’s words.

Stone temple = Rome
GC 25   Herod the Great had lavished upon it both Roman wealth and Jewish treasure, and even the emperor of the world had enriched it with his gifts. Massive blocks of white marble, of almost fabulous size, forwarded from Rome for this purpose, formed a part of its structure; and to these the disciples had called the attention of their Master, saying: “See what manner of stones and what buildings are here!” Mark 13:1.
To these words, Jesus made the solemn and startling reply: “Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” Matthew 24:2.

Destruction of Jerusalem = last days
GC 25  The prophecy which He uttered was twofold in its meaning; while foreshadowing the destruction of Jerusalem, it prefigured also the terrors of the last great day.
GC 36  The Saviour’s prophecy concerning the visitation of judgments upon Jerusalem is to have another fulfillment, of which that terrible desolation was but a faint shadow. In the fate of the chosen city we may behold the doom of a world that has rejected God’s mercy and trampled upon His law.

Unfruitful tree = Jewish nation
CG 27  The parable of the unfruitful tree represented God’s dealings with the Jewish nation.

leaven = idolatry
GC 43  The foul leaven of idolatry, thus brought into the church, continued its baleful work.

Abel = True Christians
Cain = ungodly
GC 46  The early Christians were indeed a peculiar people. Their blameless deportment and unswerving faith were a continual reproof that disturbed the sinner’s peace. Though few in numbers, without wealth, position, or honorary titles, they were a terror to evildoers wherever their character and doctrines were known. Therefore they were hated by the wicked, even as Abel was hated by the ungodly Cain.

Furnace = wicked revealing their true character
GC 48  “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise.” 2 Peter 3:9. He does not forget or neglect His children; but He permits the wicked to reveal their true character, that none who desire to do His will may be deceived concerning them. Again, the righteous are placed in the furnace of affliction, that they themselves may be purified; that their example may convince others of the reality of faith and godliness; and also that their consistent course may condemn the ungodly and unbelieving.

Shield = Scripture
GC 51  Satan well knew that the Holy Scriptures would enable men to discern his deceptions and withstand his power. It was by the word that even the Saviour of the world had resisted his attacks. At every assault, Christ presented the shield of eternal truth, saying, “It is written.” To every  suggestion of the adversary, He opposed the wisdom and power of the word.

Wilderness = true church
GC 64  “The church in the wilderness,” and not the proud hierarchy enthroned in the world’s great capital, was the true church of Christ, the guardian of the treasures of truth which God has committed to His people to be given to the world.

Mountain = righteousness of God, law, God’s creative power, assurance of His protecting care
GC 66  God had provided for His people a sanctuary of awful grandeur, befitting the mighty truths committed to their trust. To those faithful exiles the mountains were an emblem of the immutable righteousness of Jehovah. They pointed their children to the heights towering above them in unchanging majesty, and spoke to them of Him with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, whose word is as enduring as the everlasting hills. God had set fast the mountains and girded them with strength; no arm but that of Infinite Power could move them out of their place. In like manner He had established His law, the foundation of His government in heaven and upon earth. The arm of man might reach his fellow men and destroy their lives; but that arm could as readily uproot the mountains from their foundations, and hurl them into the sea, as it could change one precept of the law of Jehovah, or blot out one of His promises to those who do His will. In their fidelity to His law, God’s servants should be as firm as the unchanging hills.
The mountains that girded their lowly valleys were a constant witness to God’s creative power, and a never-failing assurance of His protecting care. Those pilgrims learned to love the silent symbols of Jehovah’s presence.

Pasture = Word of God
GC 68  hey fed the flock of God, leading them to the green pastures and living fountains of His holy word.

Fountain = Word of God
GC 68  hey fed the flock of God, leading them to the green pastures and living fountains of His holy word.

Ark = the Word of God
GC 69  Men have been unwearied in their efforts to obscure the plain, simple meaning of the Scriptures, and to make them contradict their own testimony; but like the ark upon the billowy deep, the word of God outrides the storms that threaten it with destruction.

Gold = scripture
GC 69  As the mine has rich veins of gold and silver hidden beneath the surface, so that all must dig who would discover its precious stores, so the Holy Scriptures have treasures of truth that are revealed only to the earnest, humble, prayerful seeker.

Silver = scripture
GC 69  As the mine has rich veins of gold and silver hidden beneath the surface, so that all must dig who would discover its precious stores, so the Holy Scriptures have treasures of truth that are revealed only to the earnest, humble, prayerful seeker.

Light = understanding
GC 72  They saw the plan of salvation clearly revealed in the sacred pages, and they found comfort, hope, and peace in believing in Jesus. As the light illuminated their understanding and made glad their hearts, they longed to shed its beams upon those who were in the darkness of papal error.

Darkness = error
GC 72   As the light illuminated their understanding and made glad their hearts, they longed to shed its beams upon those who were in the darkness of papal error.

Bread of life = salvation
GC 73  The Waldenses longed to break to these starving souls the bread of life, to open to them the messages of peace in the promises of God, and to point them to Christ as their only hope of salvation.

Ellen White on Bible Study

Those who are engaged in proclaiming the third angel’s message are searching the Scriptures upon the same plan that Father Miller adopted. In the little book entitled “Views of the Prophecies and Prophetic Chronology,” Father Miller gives the following simple but intelligent and important rules for Bible study and interpretation:–  {RH, November 25, 1884 par. 23}
“1. Every word must have its proper bearing on the subject presented in the Bible; 2. All Scripture is necessary, and may be understood by diligent application and study; 3. Nothing revealed in Scripture can or will be hid from those who ask in faith, not wavering; 4. To understand doctrine, bring all the scriptures together on the subject you wish to know, then let every word have its proper influence; and if you can form your theory without a contradiction, you cannot be in error; 5. Scripture must be its own expositor, since it is a rule of itself. If I depend on a teacher to expound to me, and he should guess at its meaning, or desire to have it so on account of his sectarian creed, or to be thought wise, then his guessing, desire, creed, or wisdom is my rule, and not the Bible.”  {RH, November 25, 1884 par. 24}
The above is a portion of these rules; and in our study of the Bible we shall all do well to heed the principles set forth.  {RH, November 25, 1884 par. 25}
Genuine faith is founded on the Scriptures; but Satan uses so many devices to wrest the Scriptures and bring in error, that great care is needed if one would know what they really do teach. It is one of the great delusions of this time to dwell much upon feeling, and to claim honesty while ignoring the plain utterances of the word of God because that word does not coincide with feeling. Many have no foundation for their faith but emotion. Their religion consists in excitement; when that ceases, their faith is gone. Feeling may be chaff, but the word of God is the wheat. And “what,” says the prophet, “is the chaff to the wheat?”  {RH, November 25, 1884 par. 26}
None will be condemned for not heeding light and knowledge that they never had, and they could not obtain. But many refuse to obey the truth that is presented to them by Christ’s ambassadors, because they wish to conform to the world’s standard; and the truth that has reached their understanding, the light that has shone in the soul, will condemn them in the Judgment. In these last days we have the accumulated light that has been shining through all the ages, and we shall be held correspondingly responsible. The path of holiness is not on a level with the world; it is a way cast up. If we walk in this way, if we run in the way of the Lord’s commandments, we shall find that the “path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”  {RH, November 25, 1884 par. 27}

The words of truth will grow in importance, and assume a breadth and fullness of meaning of which we have never dreamed. The beauty and riches of the word have a transforming influence on mind and character. The light of heavenly love will fall upon the heart as an inspiration.
The appreciation of the Bible grows with its study. Whichever way the student may turn, he will find displayed the infinite wisdom and love of God.  {COL 132.5}

Jesus said of the Old Testament Scriptures,–and how much more is it true of the New,–”They are they which testify of me,” [JOHN 5:39.] the Redeemer, him in whom our hopes of eternal life are centered. Yes, the whole Bible tells of Christ. From the first record of creation,–”for without him was not anything made that was made,” [JOHN 1:3]–to the closing promise, “Behold I come quickly,” we are reading of his works and listening to his voice. If you would become acquainted with the Saviour, study the Holy Scriptures.

Fill the whole heart with the words of God. They are the living water, quenching your burning thirst. They are the living bread from heaven. Jesus declares, “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.” [JOHN 6:53.] And he explains himself by saying, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” [JOHN 6:63.] Our bodies are built up from what we eat and drink; and as in the natural economy, so in the spiritual economy, it is what we meditate upon that will give tone and strength to our spiritual nature.  {CE 56.3}
The theme of redemption is one that the angels desire to look into; it will be the science and the song of the redeemed throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity. Is it not worthy of careful thought and study now? The infinite love and mercy of Jesus, the sacrifice made in our behalf, calls for the most serious and solemn reflection. We should dwell upon the character of our dear Redeemer and Intercessor. We should meditate upon the mission of him who came to save his people from their sins. As we thus contemplate heavenly themes, our faith and love will grow stronger, and our prayers will be more and more acceptable to God, because they will be more and more mixed with faith and love. They will be intelligent and fervent. There will be more constant confidence in Jesus, and a daily, living experience in his power to save to the utmost all that come unto God by him.  {CE 57.2}
As we meditate upon the perfections of the Saviour, we shall desire to be wholly transformed, and renewed in the image of his purity. There will be a hungering and thirsting of soul to become like him whom we adore. The more our thoughts are upon Christ, the more we shall speak of him to others, and represent him to the world.  {CE 57.3}
The Bible was not written for the scholar alone; on the contrary, it was designed for the common people. The great truths necessary for salvation are made as clear as noonday; and none will mistake and lose their way except those who follow their own judgment instead of the plainly revealed will of God.  {CE 57.4}
We should not take the testimony of any man as to what the Scriptures teach, but should study the word of God ourselves. If we allow others to do our thinking, we shall have crippled energies and contracted abilities. The noble powers of the mind may be so dwarfed by lack of exercise on themes worthy of their concentration as to lose their ability to grasp the deep meaning of the word of God. The mind will enlarge if it is employed in tracing out the subjects of the Bible, comparing scripture with scripture, and spiritual things with spiritual. There is nothing more calculated to strengthen the intellect than the study of the Scriptures. No other book is so potent to elevate the thoughts, to give vigor to the faculties, as the broad, ennobling truths of the Bible. If God’s word were studied as it should be, men would have a breadth of mind, a nobility of character, and a stability of purpose that is rarely seen in these times. {CE 58.1}
But there is but little benefit derived from a hasty reading of the Scriptures. One may read the whole Bible through, and yet fail to see its beauty or comprehend its deep and hidden meaning. One passage studied until its significance is clear to the mind, and its relation to the plan of salvation is evident, is of more value than the perusal of many chapters with no definite purpose in view and no positive instruction gained. Keep your Bible with you. As you have opportunity, read it; fix the texts in your memory. Even while you are walking the streets, you may read a passage, and meditate upon it, thus fixing it in the mind. {CE 58.2}
We cannot obtain wisdom without earnest attention and prayerful study. Some portions of Scripture are indeed too plain to be misunderstood; but there are others whose meaning does not lie on the surface, to be seen at a glance. Scripture must be compared with scripture. There must be careful research and prayerful reflection. And such study will be richly repaid. As the miner discovers veins of precious metal concealed beneath the surface of the earth, so will he who perseveringly searches the word of God as for hid treasure, find truths of the greatest value, which are concealed from the view of the careless seeker. The words of inspiration, pondered in the heart, will be as streams flowing from the fountain of life. {CE 58.3}
Never should the Bible be studied without prayer. Before opening its pages, we should ask for the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, and it will be given. When Nathanael came to Jesus, the Saviour exclaimed, “Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile.” [JOHN 1:47.] Nathanael said, “Whence knowest thou me?” Jesus answered, “Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee.” And Jesus will see us also in the secret places of prayer, if we will seek him for light, that we may know what is truth. Angels from the world of light will be with those who in humility of heart seek for divine guidance. {CE 59.1}
The Holy Spirit exalts and glorifies the Saviour. It is his office to present Christ, the purity of his righteousness, and the great salvation that we have through him. Jesus says, “He shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.” [JOHN 16:14.] The Spirit of truth is the only effectual teacher of divine truth. How must God esteem the human race, since he gave his Son to die for them, and appoints his Spirit to be man’s teacher and continual guide. {CE 59.2}

The study of the Bible will give strength to the intellect. Says the psalmist, “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” [PS. 119:130.] The question has often been asked me, “Should the Bible become the important book in our schools?” It is a precious book, a wonderful book. It is a treasury containing jewels of precious value. It is a history that opens to us the past centuries. Without the Bible we should have been left to conjectures and fables in regard to the occurrences of past ages. Of all the books that have flooded the world, be they ever so valuable, the Bible is the Book of books, and is most deserving of the closest study and attention. It gives not only the history of the creation of this world, but a description of the world to come. It contains instruction concerning the wonders of the universe, and it reveals to our understanding the Author of the heavens and the earth. It unfolds a simple and complete system of theology and philosophy. Those who are close students of the word of God, and who obey its instructions, and love its plain truths, will improve in mind and manners. It is an endowment of God that should awaken in every heart the most sincere gratitude; for it is the revelation of God to man. {CE 105.2}
If the truths of the Bible are woven into practical life, they will bring the mind up from its earthliness and debasement. Those who are conversant with the Scriptures, will be found to be men and women who exert an elevating influence. In searching for the heaven-revealed truths, the Spirit of God is brought into close connection with the sincere searcher of the Scriptures. An understanding of the revealed will of God, enlarges the mind, expands, elevates, and endows it with new vigor, by bringing its faculties in contact with stupendous truths. If the study of the Scriptures is made a secondary consideration, great loss is sustained. The Bible was for a time excluded from our schools, and Satan found a rich field, in which he worked with marvelous rapidity, and gathered a harvest to his liking. {CE 106.1}
The understanding takes the level of the things with which it becomes familiar. If all would make the Bible their study, we should see a people further developed, capable of thinking more deeply, and showing a greater degree of intelligence, than the most earnest efforts in studying merely the sciences and histories of the world could make them. The Bible gives the true seeker an advanced mental discipline, and he comes from contemplation of divine things with his faculties enriched; self is humbled, while God and his revealed truth are exalted. It is because men are unacquainted with the precious Bible histories, that there is so much lifting up of man, and so little honor given to God. The Bible contains just that quality of food that the Christian needs in order that he may grow strong in spirit and intellect. The searching of all books of philosophy and science cannot do for the mind and morals what the Bible can do, if it is studied and practiced. Through the study of the Bible, converse is held with patriarchs and prophets. The truth is clothed in elevated language, which exerts a fascinating power over the mind; the thought is lifted up from the things of earth, and brought to contemplate the glory of the future immortal life. What wisdom of man can compare with the grandeur of the revelation of God? Finite man, who knows not God, may seek to lessen the value of the Scriptures, and may bury the truth beneath the supposed knowledge of science. {CE 106.2}

“OUR WATCHWORD IS TO BE, ‘TO THE LAW AND TO THE TESTIMONY: IF THEY SPEAK NOT ACCORDING TO THIS WORD, IT IS BECAUSE THERE IS NO LIGHT IN THEM.’ WE HAVE A BIBLE FULL OF THE MOST PRECIOUS TRUTH. IT CONTAINS THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA OF KNOWLEDGE. THE SCRIPTURES, GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD, ARE ‘PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE, FOR REPROOF, FOR CORRECTION, FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS: THAT THE MAN OF GOD MAY BE PERFECT, THROUGHLY FURNISHED UNTO ALL GOOD WORKS.’ TAKE THE BIBLE AS YOUR STUDY BOOK.”  {CET 249.2}

“Search the Scriptures,” was the injunction of the Master. Many have lost much because they have neglected this duty. When we search the word of God, angels are by our side, reflecting bright beams of light upon its sacred pages. The Scriptures appeal to man as having power to choose between right and wrong; they speak to him in warning, in reproof, in entreaty, in encouragement. The mind must be exercised on the solemn truths of God’s word, or it will grow weak. We have the truth brought out in publications, but it is not enough to rely upon other men’s thoughts. We must examine for ourselves, and learn the reasons of our faith by comparing scripture with scripture. Take the Bible, and on your knees plead with God to enlighten your mind. If we would study the Bible diligently and prayerfully every day, we should every day see some beautiful truth in a new, clear, and forcible light.  Review and Herald, March 4, 1884.  {CSW 22.2}

When asked to hear the reasons of a doctrine that you do not understand, do not condemn the message until you have given it a thorough investigation, and know from the word of God that it is not tenable. If I had an opportunity, I would speak to the students of every Sabbath school in the land, lifting up my voice in earnest appeal that they go to the word of God, seeking for truth and light. God has precious light to come to His people at this very time, and you should strive earnestly in your investigations to aim at nothing less than a thorough knowledge of every point of truth, that you may not be found in the day of God among those who have not lived by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.  {CSW 31.2}
The momentous issues at stake through neglect of the word of God should be carefully considered. The study of he Bible is worthy of the best mental effort, the most sanctified ability. When new light is presented to the church, it is perilous to shut yourselves away from it. Refusing to hear because you are prejudiced against the message to the messenger will not make your case excusable before God. To condemn that which you have not heard and do not understand will not exalt your wisdom in the eyes of those who are candid in their investigations of truth. And to speak with contempt of those whom God has sent with a message of truth, is folly and madness. If our youth are seeking to educate themselves to be workers in His cause, they should learn the way of the Lord, and live by every word that proceedeth out of His mouth. They are not to make up their minds that the whole truth has been unfolded, and that the Infinite One has no more light for His people. If they entrench themselves in the belief that the whole truth has been revealed, they will be in danger of discarding precious jewels of truth that shall be discovered as men turn their attention to the searching of the rich mine of God’s word.   {CSW 32.1}

Many a portion of Scripture which learned men pronounce a mystery, or pass over as unimportant, is full of comfort and instruction to him who has been taught in the school of Christ. One reason why many theologians have no clearer understanding of God’s word is, they close their eyes to truths which they do not wish to practice. An understanding of Bible truth depends not so much on the power of intellect brought to the search as on the singleness of purpose, the earnest longing after righteousness. {CSW 38.1}
The Bible should never be studied without prayer. The Holy Spirit alone can cause us to feel the importance of those things easy to be understood, or prevent us from wresting truths difficult of comprehension. It is the office of heavenly angels to prepare the heart so to comprehend God’s word that we shall be charmed with its beauty, admonished by its warnings, or animated and strengthened by its promises. We should make the psalmist’s petition our own, “Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law.” Temptations often appear irresistible because, through neglect of prayer and the study of the Bible, the tempted one cannot readily remember God’s promises and meet Satan with the Scripture weapons. But angels are round about those who are willing to be taught in divine things; and in the time of great necessity, they will bring to their remembrance the very truths which are needed.  TSS 121, 122.  {CSW 38.2}

The Bible should be a book for study. The precious pearls of truth do not lie upon the surface, to be found by a careless, uninterested reader. Christ knew what was best for us, of whatever age, when He commanded us, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”  {RH, November 9, 1886 par. 11}

No man is safe for a day or an hour without prayer. Especially should we entreat the Lord for wisdom to understand His Word. Here are revealed the wiles of the tempter, and the means by which he may be successfully resisted. Satan is an expert in quoting Scripture, placing his own interpretation upon passages, by which he hopes to cause us to stumble. We should study the Bible with humility of heart, never losing sight of our dependence upon God. While we must constantly guard against the devices of Satan, we should pray in faith continually, “Lead us not into temptation.”  {FLB 331.2}

The Holy Spirit has been given to us as an aid in the study of the word. Jesus promises, “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” Those who are under the training of the Holy Spirit will be able to teach the word intelligently. And when it is made the study book, with earnest supplication for the Spirit’s guidance, and a full surrender of the heart to be sanctified through the truth, it will accomplish all that Christ has promised.  {FE 433.3}

The Lord calls upon all who believe His word to awake out of sleep. Precious light has come, appropriate for this time. It is Bible truth, showing the perils that are right upon us. This light should lead us to a diligent study of the Scriptures and a most critical examination of the positions which we hold. . . . Believers are not to rest in suppositions and ill-defined ideas of what constitutes truth. Their faith must be firmly founded upon the word of God so that when the testing time shall come and they are brought before councils to answer for their faith they may be able to give a reason for the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. . . .  {CW 40.1}

The Firm Foundation of Our Faith

Many of our people do not realize how firmly the foundation of our faith has been laid. My husband, Elder Joseph Bates, Father Pierce, [OLDER BRETHREN AMONG THE PIONEERS ARE HERE THUS REMINISCENTLY REFERRED TO. "FATHER PIERCE" WAS STEPHEN PIERCE, WHO SERVED IN MINISTERIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE WORK IN THE EARLY DAYS. "FATHER ANDREWS" WAS EDWARD ANDREWS, THE FATHER OF J. N. ANDREWS.--COMPILERS.] Elder {Hiram} Edson, and others who were keen, noble, and true, were among those who, after the passing of the time in 1844, searched for the truth as for hidden treasure. I met with them, and we studied and prayed earnestly. Often we remained together until late at night, and sometimes through the entire night, praying for light and studying the Word. Again and again these brethren came together to study the Bible, in order that they might know its meaning, and be prepared to teach it with power. When they came to the point in their study where they said, “We can do nothing more,” the Spirit of the Lord would come upon me, I would be taken off in vision, and a clear explanation of the passages we had been studying would be given me, with instruction as to how we were to labor and teach effectively. Thus light was given that helped us to understand the scriptures in regard to Christ, His mission, and His priesthood. A line of truth extending from that time to the time when we shall enter the city of God, was made plain to me, and I gave to others the instruction that the Lord had given me.  {1SM 206.4}
During this whole time I could not understand the reasoning of the brethren. My mind was locked, as it were, and I could not comprehend the meaning of the scriptures we were studying. This was one of the greatest sorrows of my life. I was in this condition of mind until all the principal points of our faith were made clear to our minds, in harmony with the Word of God. The brethren knew that when not in vision, I could not understand these matters, and they accepted as light direct from heaven the revelations given.  {1SM 207.1}

KJV Isaiah 28:7.  But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. 8.  For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean. 9.  Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10.  For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11.  For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12.  To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13.  But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. 14.  Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. 15.  Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: 16.  Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. 17.  Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. 18.  And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. 19.  From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report. 20.  For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. 21.  For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act. 22.  Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth. 23.  Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech. 24.  Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground? 25.  When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place? 26.  For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him. 27.  For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod. 28.  Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen. 29.  This also cometh forth from the Lord of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
KJV Isaiah 35:8.  And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.
KJV Proverbs 19:27.  Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
KJV Luke 24:27.  And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
KJV Luke 24: 44.  And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45.  Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
KJV Romans 16:26.  But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
KJV James 5:19.  Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
KJV 2 Peter 1:19.  We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20.  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21.  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

“5. Scripture must be its own expositor, since it is a rule of itself. If I depend on a teacher to expound to me, and he should guess at its meaning, or desire to have it so on account of his sectarian creed, or to be thought wise, then his guessing, desire, creed, or wisdom, is my rule, and not the Bible. Proof, Ps. 19:7-11; 119:97-105: Matt. 23:8-10; 1 Cor. 2:12-16; Eze. 34:18, 19; Luke 11:52; Matt. 2:7,8.
KJV Psalms 19:7.  The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8.  The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9.  The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10.  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11.  Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
KJV Psalms 119:97.  O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. 98.  Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. 99.  I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. 100.  I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
101.  I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. 102.  I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. 103.  How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104.  Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. 105.  Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
KJV Matthew 23:8.  But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9.  And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10.  Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
KJV 1 Corinthians 2:12.  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13.  Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14.  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15.  But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16.  For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
KJV Ezekiel 34:18.  Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet?19.  And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.
KJV Luke 11:52.  Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
KJV Matthew 2:7.  Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8.  And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

“6. God has revealed things to come, by visions, in figures and parables; and in this way the same things are oftentimes revealed again and again, by different visions, or in different figures and parables. If you wish to understand them, you must combine them all in one. Proof, Ps. 89:19; Hos. 12:10; Hab. 2:2; Acts 2:17; 1 Cor. 10:6; Heb. 9:9, 24; Ps. 78:2; Matt. 13:13, 34; Gen. 41:1-32; Dan. 2d, 7th & 8th; Acts 10:9-16.
KJV Psalms 89:19.  Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
KJV Hosea 12:10.  I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
KJV Habakkuk 2:2.  And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
KJV Acts 2:17.  And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
KJV 1 Corinthians 10:6.  Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
KJV Hebrews 9:9.  Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;
KJV Hebrews 9:24.  For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
KJV Psalms 78:2.  I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
KJV Matthew 13:13.  Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
KJV Matthew 13:34.  All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:35.  That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
KJV Genesis 41:1.  And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.
KJV Acts 10:9.  On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: 10.  And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, 11.  And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12.  Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13.  And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. 14.  But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.  15.  And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. 16.  This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

“7. Visions are always mentioned as such. 2 Cor. 12:1.
KJV 2 Corinthians 12:1.  It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

“8. Figures always have a figurative meaning, and are used much in prophecy to represent future things, times and events–such as mountains, meaning governments; Dan. 2:35, 44; beasts, meaning kingdoms; Dan. 7:8, 17; waters, meaning people; Rev. 17:1, 15; day, meaning year, &c. Eze. 4:6.
KJV Daniel 2:35.  Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
KJV Daniel 2:44.  And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
KJV Daniel 7:8.  I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
KJV Daniel 7:17.  These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
KJV Revelation 7:1.  And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
KJV Revelation 7:15.  Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
KJV Ezekiel 4:6.  And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year.

“9. Parables are used as comparisons to illustrate subjects, and must be explained in the same way as figures, by the subject and Bible. Mark 4:13.
KJV Mark 4:13.  And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?

“10. Figures sometimes have two or more different significations, as day is used in a figurative sense to represent three different periods of time, namely, first, indefinite; Eccl. 7:14; second, definite, a day for a year; Eze. 4:6; and third, a day for a thousand years. 2 Pet. 3:8. The right construction will harmonize with the Bible, and make good sense; other constructions will not.
KJV Ecclesiastes 7:14.  In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
KJV Ezekiel 4:5.  For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.
KJV 2 Peter 3:8.  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

“11. If a word makes good sense as it stands, and does no violence to the simple laws of nature, it is to be understood literally; if not, figuratively. Rev. 12:1, 2; 17:3-7.
KJV Revelation 2:1.  Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2.  I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
KJV Revelation 17:3.  So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

“12. To learn the meaning of a figure, trace the word through your Bible, and when you find it explained, substitute the explanation for the word used; and, if it make good sense, you need not look further; if not, look again.

“13. To know whether we have the true historical event for the fulfillment of a prophecy: If you find every word of the prophecy (after the figures are understood) is literally fulfilled, then you may know that your history is the true event; but if one word lacks a fulfillment, then you must look for another event, or wait its future development; for God takes care that history and prophecy shall agree, so that the true believing children of God may never be ashamed. Ps. 22:5; Isa. 45:17-19; 1 Pet. 2:6; Rev. 17:17; Acts 3:18.
KJV Psalms 22:5.  They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
KJV Isaiah 45:17.  But Israel shall be saved in the Lord with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end. 18.  For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else. 19.  I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.
KJV 1 Peter 2:6.  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
KJV Revelation 17:17.  For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
KJV Acts 3:18.  But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.

“14. The most important rule of all is, that you must have faith. It must be a faith that requires a sacrifice, and, if tried, would give up the dearest object on earth, the world and all its desires–character, living, occupation, friends, home, comforts and worldly honors. If any of these should hinder our believing any part of God’s word, it would show our faith to be vain. Nor can we ever believe so long as one of these motives lies lurking in our hearts. We must believe that God will never forfeit his word; and we can have confidence that He who takes notice of the sparrow’s fall, and numbers the hairs of our head, will guard the translation of his own word, and throw a barrier around it, and prevent those who sincerely trust in God, and put implicit confidence in his word, from erring far from the truth.
