Butter and Honey Shall He Eat Isaiah 7:15

Posted by hystar on August 28, 2008

KJV Isaiah 7:15
15.  Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Think about the physical.  What is the physical thought about?
The physical thought here is all we need to do is to eat butter and honey to know the difference between good and evil.  Is this possible?  This is the easiest way to determine if a verse has a spiritual meaning that needs to be interpreted.  If the statement made in the verse does not make sense or is physically impossible the verse must be spiritual.  To find the spiritual meaning we need to first identify the key words.  In this verse the key words appear to be butter and honey.  An experienced student of the Bible will also recognize the word eat as a spiritual word that needs to be interpreted.

KJV 1 Corinthians 2:14
14.  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Eating physical butter and honey will not help us tell the difference between good and evil.  So this text must be referring to a spiritual butter and a spiritual honey we are to eat spiritually.

So how do we find the spiritual meaning of this butter and honey?  We must learn how the Bible teaches the meaning of such spiritual words on it’s own.  The Bible at times is based on Inductive Reasoning.  This is the process  of bringing forth facts to prove something.  It is the process of reasoning from parts to a whole or general conclusion.  Many facts are examined which apply to the subject being studied in order to draw a general conclusion which is in agreement with the original statement.

Examine the text for the physical meanings that are present.  And then apply the spiritual meaning of those physical objects in the text.  Remember to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit before entering into any study of the Bible.

From a Strong’s Concordance or using a Bible search program we will find the following verses using the word butter.

KJV Genesis 18:8
8.  And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

Here we see that butter is something to be eaten.

KJV Judges 5:25
25.  He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.

Butter is something the woman gives in a lordly dish.  This verse adds two features to consider.  Notice that he asked for water and the woman gave him milk.  The verse adds that “she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.”  One of two things are happening.  The woman is either bringing milk and butter or the Bible is using milk and butter interchangeably.  Something to consider as we look further into this study.

KJV 2 Samuel 17:29
29.  And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

Butter and honey is something that will satisfy our physical hunger and thirst.

KJV Job 20:17
17.  He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter.

Butter and honey is something that is physically hidden.  If the Bible describes butter and honey as being physically hidden it is possible for them to be spiritually hidden.

KJV Psalms 55:21
21.  The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

Butter represents physical words.  If butter can represent physical words it can also represent spiritual words.

KJV Proverbs 30:33
33.  Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.

Physical butter comes form physical churning.  Spiritual butter must also come from spiritual churning.   We need to identify this spiritual churning.

KJV Isaiah 7:22
22.  And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

It takes an abundance (large amount) of physical milk to make physical butter.  It will also take a large amount of spiritual milk to make spiritual butter.

Now that we have collected a series of verses containing the word butter we can begin to look at each one of the physical things that butter can represent and let the Bible show us the spiritual meaning of each one of these physical traits.

We can now let the Bible explain the spiritual meaning for each of the physical characteristic of butter.

Hunger and thirst:
“The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.”  2 Samuel 17:29  Shows us the physical hunger and thirst.  Other text will show us the meaning of a spiritual hunger and thirst.

KJV Deuteronomy 8:3
3.  And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

KJV Amos 8:11
11.  Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

Spiritual hunger and thirst are signs that there is a shortage of the word God.

He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter.”   Job 20:17  How does the Bible describe things that are spiritually hidden?

KJV Isaiah 48:6
6.  Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.

KJV 1 Corinthians 4:5
5.  Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

Things that are spiritually hidden are revealed by God.

“The words of his mouth were smoother than butter,”  Psalms 55:21  People give us physical words.  How does the Bible describe spiritual words?

KJV John 17:8
8.  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

KJV John 17:14
14.  I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

KJV 1 Corinthians 12:8
8.  For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

Spiritual words are given to us by Jesus through the Spirit.

KJV Hebrews 5:12-14
12.  For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13.  For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14.  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

The use of milk is a sign of  being “unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.”  The use of milk illustrates the use of the simple things of the Bible.  A babe is someone that does not dig deep into the Bible but uses only what is on the surface.

We need to find a churning in the Bible.  Churning is a repetitive action that takes time to produce the correct result.

KJV 1 Corinthians 2:13
13.  Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

We learn about the word of God by comparing spiritual things with spiritual things.  Going back and forth.  A spiritual churning.

Spiritual milk is the simple use of the Bible.  Spiritual butter is the churning of the spiritual milk or going back and forth throughout the Bible comparing spiritual things with spiritual things.

We can now take a look at the second word in this verse, honey.

KJV Psalms 119:103
103.  How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

KJV Psalms 19:7-10
7.  The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
8.  The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9.  The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
10.  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Spiritual honey is the word of God, His Law.

The last word to find the spiritual meaning for is eat:

KJV Jeremiah 15:16
16.  Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

We are to eat the word of God like food.

We now see that butter is given to God’s church as the word of God to satisfy our spiritual hunger.  This butter is hidden within the Bible.  We learn by comparing scripture with scripture.

KJV Proverbs 2:1-12
1.  My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2.  So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3.  Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4.  If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5.  Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.
6.  For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
7.  He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
8.  He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
9.  Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
10.  When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
11.  Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
12.  To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

Butter is God’s hidden treasure.

We can now make a chart of the spiritual words:

Butter:  Studying the Bible by comparing spiritual things with spiritual things to reveal the hidden treasures within the word of God.

Honey:  he word of God and His law.

Eat:  Taking in the word of God, study.

KJV Isaiah 7:15
15.  Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Rewritten from what we have studied:

The hidden knowledge of God’s words (butter) and His Law (honey) shall he study (eat) that he may know to refuse evil and choose good.

KJV Isaiah 7:14-15
14.  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
15.  Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Here the Bible prophesied that Jesus or Immanuel would study the Bible and compare scripture to scripture so that He could understand (eat) the hidden wisdom of God (butter) and His law (honey).

KJV Matthew 4:4
4.  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

A diet of only butter and honey would not be good for us physically.  But butter and honey do make bread taste better.  Bread is the word of God.  We must not only eat the bread of life but study to show ourselves approved of God.

KJV 2 Timothy 2:15
15.  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Learn how Solomon’s wisdom led him to be a prophet. Walk with Isaiah through a war torn region to deliver messages to kings and leaders. Stand with Jeremiah as God teaches him to be one of the Bible’s youngest and most important prophets. Watch Jonah run from God before he found out what a prophet is supposed to be. Stand with Zechariah as he encourages the people who returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and warns them of things to come. Finally examine Malachi’s last message in the Old Testament to see how the world has been preparing to fulfill that prophecy, or if they missed the message. Isaiah showed how God communicates with His servants. Jeremiah showed how God chooses and trains prophets. Together those two books reveal a part of God’s personality few people are able to see or experience. This is the forth in a series of books covering the prophecies Jesus fulfilled from Genesis to Malachi. Buy the whole set.

    God with us showed us how to live successfully in his example of not only feeding on the word, but meditating on it (reviewing it in our minds during the day, looking at it from every possible angle and seeing the many ways it applies to us).

    Thank you for the comment. I think this study shows, meditation is the beginning of a study. A study is just as it is defined. Going back and forth throughout the Bible to find the answers. The Bible says the Holy Spirit will be sent to guide you. Your meditation will also guide you but it is up to you to search the Bible, the word of God to find the answers.

    I have some notes on a study that has taken me on many twists and turns over the past week and lead me to some facts I have never before seen nor considered, until after reviewing a great amount of text. I reviewed the text, the Spirit put it in order. Good Bible study is like a union. Like a two way conversation with God.

    Even the physical eating butter and honey helps me choice good and not evil these days. Butter is natural ,margarine is not. Honey in my drinks helps me to stay away from sugar .
    I feel over processed food is a form of evil on peoples bodies. The physical affects the spiritual.

    No you are wrong there. There’s no where in the Bible that states the physical affects the spiritual but rather it’s the spiritual that affects the physical. Divine nature!
