House Built Upon A Rock Matthew 7

Posted by hystar on May 9, 2009

KJV Matthew 7:24-29

24. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

28. And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

29. For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

This parable compares two classes of men, each building a house. The wise man builds his house upon a rock, a foundation not easily moved. A house properly attached to a solid foundation can be as strong as the foundation. The foolish man builds his house on sand which offers no foundation. There is no way to permanently attach a home to sand. When the sand moves so will the house. The wind and rain came down upon both of the houses for what appears to be some time, long enough to create a devastating flood. As the flood rises the house built on sand is washed away while the home built on the rock stands strong.

The main point of this parable lies in the effect the storm had on each house. The house built on sand was completley destroyed while the house built on the rock remained standing.

Some of the key words in this parable are; house, rock, sand, flood, and wind. To find the spiritual meaning of the parable the key words will be examined in other texts.

House

KJV 2 Corinthians 5:1. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

KJV Galatians 6:10. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

KJV Ephesians 2:19. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20. And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21. In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22. In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

KJV Colossians 4:15. Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house.

KJV 1 Timothy 3:15. But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

KJV Hebrews 3:6. But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

House = church

Rock

KJV Deuteronomy 32:4. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

KJV 2 Samuel 22:2. And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

KJV 2 Samuel 22:32. For who is God, save the Lord? and who is a rock, save our God?

KJV Psalms 62:6. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. 7. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

KJV 1 Corinthians 10:4. And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

Rock = God and Christ

Sand

KJV Genesis 22:17. That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

KJV Genesis 32:12. And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

KJV Joshua 11:4. And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.

KJV Isaiah 10:22. For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

Sand = people

Flood

KJV 2 Samuel 22: 4. I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 5. When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; 6. The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;

KJV Psalms 18:4. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

KJV Revelation 12:15. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. 16. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.

KJV Nahum 1:7. The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. 8. But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

KJV Isaiah 59:19. So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.

Flood = ungodly, evil men, a trial and destruction.

Wind

KJV Job 1:19. And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

KJV Job 8:2. How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?

KJV Job 15:2. Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

KJV Psalms 78:39. For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

KJV Proverbs 25:14. Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

KJV Isaiah 41:29. Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion.

KJV Isaiah 64:6. But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

KJV Jeremiah 5:13. And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

Wind = a trial and destruction, false words, vain knowledge, false prophets and gods. Wind has all the allurement of false religion.

House = church

Rock = God and Christ

Sand = people.

Flood = ungodly, evil men, a trial and destruction.

Wind = a trial and destruction, false words, vain knowledge, false prophets and gods. Wind has all the allurement of false religion.

To paraphrase Matthew 7: 24-29

Whoever hears the words of Christ and follows them is like a wise man who builds his church upon God. When the ungodly introduced trials, temptations and false teaching the church stood strong because it was built upon Christ.

Whoever hears the words of Christ and does not follow them is like a foolish man who builds his church upon people. When the ungodly introduced trials, temptations and false teaching the church fell because it was built upon people.

When Jesus was finished, the people were astonished at His doctrine. For he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
