Treasure in Heaven Luke 12

Posted by hystar on June 19, 2009

KJV Luke 12:33-34

33. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

34. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

This is the end of a longer parable where Jesus tells His followers worrying will gain them nothing. He goes on to tell them, sell what you have and give to the poor. By doing this you will be building yourself treasures in Heaven where the thief or moth will not be able to touch them. Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

There are a number of key words in this text. To begin this study two key words will be compared with scripture to find the spiritual meaning, unlocking a deeper spiritual meaning.

Treasure

KJV 2 Kings 16:8

8. And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria.

KJV 2 Kings 18:15

15. And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king’s house.

Treasure has an earthly meaning.

KJV Exodus 1:11. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

KJV Deuteronomy 32:33. Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps. 34. Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?

KJV Proverbs 21:6. The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.

The Bible makes it clear, earthly treasure comes at a price.

KJV Exodus 19:5. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

KJV Psalms 135:4. For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure.

KJV Deuteronomy 28:12. The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

KJV Proverbs 2:3. Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4. If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5. Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

KJV Isaiah 33:6

6. And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the Lord is his treasure.

KJV Colossians 2:3

3. In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

The texts above show two meanings for treasure. The earthly physical treasure and the spiritual treasure which is wisdom and knowledge from God. Treasure can also represent God’s people. This is a promise of Heaven and eternal life.

Treasure = wisdom and knowledge, God’s people.

Moth

KJV Job 13:28. And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.

KJV Psalms 39:11. When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

KJV Isaiah 50:9. Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

KJV Isaiah 51:8. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

KJV Hosea 5:12. Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness.

Moth = something eaten away, consumed or rotted.

To paraphrase Luke 12:33-34 using the spiritual meanings for the key words treasure and moth.

Sell all that you have and give alms; provide yourself bags which do not grow old, wisdom and knowledge in the heavens that will not fail. There thieves will not approach and it will not rot away. For where your wisdom and knowledge is, there will your heart be also.
